Autumn has some of the best riding of the year — quieter roads and incredible colour — but conditions change quickly. Here's what to watch for.
Road surface
- Wet leaves are as slippery as ice, especially under trees.
- Mud from farm traffic builds up during harvest.
- Morning dew and shaded corners stay damp all day.
Low sun
Low sun blinds you and hides you from other drivers. Carry a tinted visor or sunglasses and slow down when turning into the sun.
Cold tyres
Tyres take longer to warm up in cold air. Take the first few miles gently, and remember they cool quickly at stops.
Visibility and kit
- Switch to warmer layers and waterproofs.
- Add high-visibility elements for dull days.
- Check lights and clean your visor often.
